BILL OF LADING

bill of ladenA bill of lading (BOL) is a required document to move a freight shipment. The bill of lading acts as a receipt of freight services, a contract between the freight carrier and the shipper and as a document of title to the goods. It is a legally binding document and provides the driver and the carrier with all the details needed to process the freight shipment and invoice it correctly.

A completed bill of lading legally shows that the carrier has received the freight as described and is obligated to deliver that freight in good condition to the consignee. The information in the bill of lading is very important as it influences the actions of personnel along the route of the shipment.

The information on the Bill of Lading must be consistent with the information listed on the Commercial Invoice. It must also contain a complete and accurate description of the goods and it must be legible.
